South Cambs and City.                                            –A-

Sam W

I wish to join the UKYP because my underlying desire is to represent the young people within this innovative community, and have real knowledge of the needs of people from widely differing backgrounds. My suitability is reflected in that I seek to speak for everyone, naturally with my own ideas of priorities, with thought to the local agenda. Importantly, I am aware of today’s affairs and often see psychology as the key to social balance. Although I am younger than most MYPs, I have experience in debates on key issues and realise that the role that young people can play in democracy. In addition, I never represent any particular party, and my passion is that youth should never be underestimated: we speak from the heart, and are not swayed by the focus of specified business. The best ethos is when the best ethos is continually encouraged, and there I can assist.

Rosie B

I think you should vote for me because I want to improve the quality of life for young people. I feel strongly about the facilities and the transport in Cambridge. I think the transport like buses should be free for those under 16, and maybe introduce the oyster card. The cost of facilities should be cheaper and affordable to everyone. We need to get more affordable shops for young people. We also need more youth clubs and centres. I wish to include awareness of drug use into schools by making it interesting, such as drama workshops. Also, I think schools should encourage young people to recycle and raise awareness of the environment. If you vote for me, I will listen to what you want and speak up for you! Thank you.

Lizzy T

I’m Lizzy (aged 14). If I become an MYP my aim would be to change the often incredibly negative (normally undeserved) stereotype given to young people, and increase the support available to them. I think that there should be more self-help for young people and teenagers. For example there are many help-lines set up for children and young adults, there aren’t any that involve young people as part of the solution – and this can put some people off. Many young people would feel more comfortable talking to someone of their own age who might be encountering similar problems themselves rather than talking with an adult. I think that we are mature enough to help others out. Getting involved in this way will promote and highlight positive actions that involve young people, which may also help dissemble the unfavourable image given to us.

Jessica P

Recipe to make a fair society:

Step one: mix the opinion of all the teenagers with a spoonful of equality. Add a tablespoon of trust and gently stir. Drop a pinch of reality and sprinkle all over originality.

This recipe shouldn’t sound complicated, and that’s because it isn’t. I’m certain there are loads of new ideas from teenagers like you that could change the face of Cambridge. If you vote for me, I will do whatever I can to make these brainwaves a reality. I believe that Cambridge is a place of history and education but factors like transport can become a big issue. Vote for me and I have plans for bus journeys to become free for under 16s. Other ideas such as racism and bullying will be put forward. I’ve said my bit, now it’s your turn. If you want someone friendly and approachable…vote for me!

Sophie J

My name is Sophie Jones and I am writing to introduce myself because I am interested in becoming a Member of Youth Parliament. I am confident, hard working and enthusiastic pupil. As part of my application I would like to highlight the following points. I am experienced in helping others and working as part of a team. This is the 3rd year running that I have been on the school council. During this time, I have improved the provision of sports equipment, helped improve the sports environment. My ambition is to improve services for teenagers by providing things like weekend provision at youth clubs and daily trips at the weekend. I have learned to work for the benefit of others.

Matthew W

I consider myself to b e a confident, mature and outgoing person. I am interested in young people having a voice and would like to be active in this area. I have been a member of the school council for three years. I have been in the Air Training Corps for the last two years where I had experience of training and supporting young cadets. I did work experience with the Cambridge City Council Youth Work team and was involved in organising activities for young people. I am currently head boy at my school.

Tom S

I have now served with the UK Youth Parliament as a Deputy MYP for two years and I am standing again because I believe that I can make a difference. We young people are continually treated as some kind of underclass by many adults. They seem to think of us as unworthy and we are stereotyped as thugs. This has got to stop.

Second, I would campaign for reduced bus fares for young people, and not only this, I would campaign for improved bus services as currently public transport leaves a lot to be desired. Why should we pay high prices for an awful service? Finally, I will voice the views of young people regardless of my personal views. I will articulate your concerns. I will get your voices heard at whatever level necessary. I will resolve the issues that you raise.

Charlie K

I believe that children should e treated more like adults, for example – voting. I would like to campaign for outdoor and indoor facilities and the use of gymnasiums.

Cameron H

I believe that transport is a problem because I live in Haddenham and it takes 30 minutes to get to school and even longer back because my mum and dad work, so I have to go somewhere. In Haddenham the buses only go at 8 a.m and 7 p.m and this is the same for most out of Cambridge small villages.

Jennifer D

My name is Jennifer and I am in year 9. I believe that young people should be taken more seriously and not stereo-typed for the way they dress. I believe that bullies and people that are treated different should be treated the same as everyone else, and given help. There should be more help such as transport for disabled people so that they, and their families can have a decent, not too limited lifestyle. I think that both younger and older people should be encouraged to be eco-friendly by doing things such as putting safer cycle paths in. I would also like the voting and parent responsibility age changed, because you can have a baby and leave home at 16 but your parents still have the right to say whether you can get married - and you can’t vote until you are 18.

Kayleigh B

I wish to be involved in Youth Parliament because I believe strongly that young people have the right to voice their opinions and be heard by adults because the decisions adults make affect young people. Sometimes the choices made by adults are not right for young people and I would like to be able to help adults make the right choices for everyone. For example, I would campaign for all age limits to be the same as I feel it is confusing. You can leave home at 16, however you can’t vote until you are 18. A young person’s voice is also very important for decisions about facilities and activities for children and teenagers. I believe I would speak up for young people and help us to be counted

East Cambs and Fenland                                             -B-

Emily A

My name is Emily and I have lived in Fenland all my life. I have been involved in Youth Politics for two years in my school and in the Fenland District Council. I believe passionately in the involvement of every single one of you in your education, your life and your community. But I am not going to sit here and make you listen to false promises. That is not fair on you. Not will I ramble on about facilities you might not even need. What I Will do, is listen. I will listen to each and every one of your opinions about what you want, and need. Then I will try to make it happen and change things for you, for the better. Remember a vote for me means a vote for you, and a vote for Fenland.

Thomas W

My name is Thomas and I have lived in Wisbech all my life. I am vice-captain of Thorny Rugby club under-17 squad and so I am used to leadership roles. I have a future career in the Army which I hope to start at 18. I believe I would be a good representative for East Cambs and Fenland because I am confident and familiar with the needs of the young people. If I am voted n to be a MYP, I wish to push issues like reducing public transport costs for young people in full-time education. Another issue would be to raise improving sporting facilities in schools especially those that will be involved in the 2012 Olympics. I will best represent the views of the people in Cambridgeshire, as I would make sure others acknowledge my point of view over a particular issue. I also will listen to others’ opinions.

James M

I care about issues affecting my friends, and those younger than myself. I am able to voice my opinion and get my points across. I am good at listening and very approachable. I am very interested in being able to make changes for the better. I study with mainstream students as well as attending a special school for mixed abilities, so I think I can understand the problems that affect all different types of young people who have different abilities.

Oliver N

I would like to be a Member of the UK Youth Parliament because I would like to change things in my region, Fenland, like improving the facilities for young people. I would like to get some BMX parks but less skate parks. I would like to clean up the public toilets because they smell really bad. I would ask businesses to come into Ely and the surrounding area to get more restaurants as well as some more bars for adults. I would also like to improve traffic safety.

Louise P

I would like to be a Member of the UK Youth Parliament because I wish to make a difference to our community and make it a better place to live in and to make us all proud of where we live. I also want to change the way young people are judged, we should all be seen as one. If I am elected, I will see that this happens. Another reason is, I want to be able to voice my opinion as well as others and to listen to what young people have to say, even if I don’t agree. I believe that I could help young people from all walks of life to become more closer as a community and have better views on our society.

Jacob B

My name is Jacob and I wish to make improvements to East Cambs and Fenland. I have lived in the area all my life and want to give something back to the community. I enjoy thinking about topical subjects that need attention and also want to hear what young people want, then try to help them. If I am elected, I will try to improve cycle routes, bus pass costs to allow more choice in education. I would like to see better-equipped classes in schools and establish safe pleasant public areas for relaxation. People need someone to represent them who are dependable and reliable. I will listen to peoples’ views and try to implement them in some way.

Josh O

Democracy? What is democracy? Democracy is being heard. Being listened to. Having a voice. A voice that will be heard by decision makers, by councils and by the government. In this upcoming UKYP election, I will provide you with this voice. Provide you with this right to democracy we rarely experience. But why me? You may think that any young person, with the aid of the UKYP, would be able to talk to decision makers and change things for young people in Cambridgeshire, and, to a certain extent, this may be true. But I have three years experience of representing young people in Cambridgeshire, two as a constituency cabinet member and this last year as Member of Youth Parliament, representing you. I entered the UKYP back in 2005 as the youngest member. Since then, my knowledge of the UKYP and how to work it effectively to voice my constituent’s views is second to none. I am passionate about my work with the UKYP; voicing young peoples’ views. Representing you.

North West Cambs and Huntingdon                          -C-

Andrew G

I want to be your Member of Youth Parliament for one main reason; I believe that I can make a difference for you, the young people of Cambridgeshire. As we all know, there are many issues facing young people at the moment that at the moment, are seemingly ignored. Now I want to change this. How many times have you been made to pay too much for something despite the fact that you’re young enough for a discount? How many times have you been judged by people as a bunch of yobs, just by them looking at you? AS well as this, how many good facilities are there for young people to go to in the evening? Not many. Vote for me and I will give you a strong voice. Vote for me and I will make sure that voice is heard.

Saiqa B

When I become MYP, I will campaign to lower the voting age to 16. We need something radical like this so that politicians are forced to listen to young people. I think 16 year olds are old enough to vote and the turnout at elections would be generally higher. If politicians had to listen to young people to get their votes, they mightn’t have passed university top-up fees. I stand for everyone –C-and I am really dedicated to this position, and I favour change. I think I’ll be good at taking over from the previous MYP because I have worked well with her in the past. I am currently taking government and politics at A-level. I am finding it really interesting and I therefore have a good knowledge and background in politics. I am going to make the adult politicians listen to us, whether they like it or not.

Joe D

I think I would make a good member because I am hardworking and a good listener. I have been on my school council in primary school where I was chairman in year 6. When I was chairman, we brought a new menu in to school to improve healthy eating. I was also part of an organisation called 23 United, where chairmen of school councils all over the county (23 schools), would meet and discuss school topics. I think I would bring new qualities to the UKYP, like my general knowledge of the things that are going on around us. Also, I think I would bring my confidence and past experience, energy and enthusiasm.

Hermanus C

I am the right candidate for you. I am enthusiastic and diligent and therefore see projects through until the end and make sure they are completed to the highest standard. When there are issues of concern, I am not just all talk, I get things sorted. I believe change is good, therefore I will make change happen for the better. I am open minded to new ideas and willing to listen to anyone. I, myself, directly get involved in community projects because just helping with organising isn’t good enough. Consequently I know what the needs are of everybody. Therefore I believe I am the right candidate for you.

Adam K

Would you like….?

  • A discount card for public transport?
  • Votes@16?
  • An improvement of SRE education
  • I can get you these. If you vote for me. With my experience within the UKYP, school councils, and work experience with the conservatives, I not only have the knowledge, but the ability to make change. With my personality, wit and passion for the generation of tomorrow (yes that’s you…), I will not only implement change, but impact on every one of your lives.
